Villa's busy summer meets Wan‑Bissaka loan: contrasting transfer paths

At a press conference hosted by EFE/EPA/Darko Bandic and POOLEFEMUNDO, Unai Emery announced Aston Villa’s latest move – a season‑long loan of 28‑year‑old former Manchester United right‑back Aaron Wan‑Bissaka, with an obligatory purchase clause – while contrasting with West Ham’s earlier €29 million price tag and a summer of big sales.

Villa’s summer transfer activity

El Aston Villa has been active in the market, selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for €136.8 million and adding midfielders Johan Manzambi and João Gomes, winger Alejandro Garnacho on loan with an obligatory purchase, and promising centre‑back Modou Keba Cissé. These moves underline the club’s intent to strengthen across the spine ahead of the 2026‑27 campaign.

The new acquisition, Aaron Wan‑Bissaka, will join Villa on a season‑long loan with a mandatory purchase clause at the end of the term. The 28‑year‑old former Manchester United defender has received clearance to travel to Birmingham for a medical examination. The Con was referenced in the announcement.

Wan‑Bissaka missed West Ham’s first two Championship fixtures while negotiations continued, delaying his involvement with the Hammers. West Ham had initially set a €29 million asking price for the right‑back.

Earlier this summer, West Ham secured lucrative exits, selling Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham for €99.3 million and Crysencio Summerville for €70 million, while captain Jarrod Bowen signed a new contract. A photo from the Mundial shows Anthony Gordon contesting a duel with Wan‑Bissaka in the match between RD Congo and England, highlighting the defender’s international experience.

Under Emery, Villa will open their Premier League 2026‑27 season on Sunday against Brighton and will also compete in the Champions League after finishing fourth and winning the Europa League last season.

The juxtaposition of Villa’s proactive rebuilding and West Ham’s high‑value sales illustrates two divergent approaches to squad management as both clubs prepare for the challenges ahead.
