Villa's £42m gamble on Garnacho stalls as Emery seeks patience
Aston Villa have faced growing speculation over the future of Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, who arrived from Chelsea on a season‑long loan with a view to a £42 million permanent deal, but has logged only three Premier League substitute appearances totalling just over half an hour.
Loan terms and limited game time
Garnacho joined Villa in the summer under manager Unai Emery, signing a one‑year loan that includes an obligation to buy in 2027 if he reaches a set number of appearances. The 22‑year‑old Argentina international has yet to start a Premier League match, featuring only as a substitute on three occasions.
His total minutes add up to barely more than thirty minutes, prompting comparisons with the Harvey Elliott situation at Villa Park last season. The limited exposure has raised doubts about whether the £42 million clause will be triggered.
Emery's reassurance and past precedent
Villa sources have dismissed rumours that Garnacho is “already finished” at the club, insisting that Emery still believes in his potential. The manager praised the player’s work ethic after a 3‑1 Carabao Cup win over Coventry City, where Garnacho was an unused substitute.
Unai Emery said: “[He has to] continue working. Work, work, train, work. When he can have minutes to play, try and play well.” He added that teammates George Hemmings, Alysson and Ibrahim Mbaye are currently ahead in the pecking order, and that Garnacho is “a little bit behind because of some circumstances we had in pre‑season”.
The club’s approach mirrors last season’s arrangement with Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, who also failed to meet the appearance threshold and returned to his parent club before moving on loan to Valencia.
Despite the early setbacks, Villa insiders maintain that the decision on a permanent transfer has not been made. They argue that the coming months will provide Garnacho with the chance to prove himself and secure the move to the Midlands.
The speculation has even been echoed in headlines that reference Man Utd, underscoring the broader interest in the Argentine’s future.
