Viktor Gyokeres' Sweden surge forces Arsenal to rethink his role

Viktor Gyokeres has turned into an ‘Ikea Gerd Muller’ for Sweden, netting his fourth consecutive goal of the international break against Romania on Monday and lifting his tally to 25, which places him 11th on the Swedish all‑time scorers list.

Swedish record‑breaking run

Gyokeres' goal against Romania on Monday was his fourth in as many matches, meaning he has scored in every game of the elongated international break. The strike lifted his international tally to 25, placing him 11th on Sweden's all‑time scorers list and giving him a goals‑per‑minute ratio better than all but two players born before the Second World War.

By contrast, Gyokeres has been rubbish for Arsenal in recent times. His last club goal came against Fulham in May and he has since featured in ten games without finding the net. Despite being Arsenal’s top scorer last season, he was dropped for Kai Havertz in the latter half and began the current campaign on the bench. Critics have labelled him a second‑choice option, questioning his quality.

Mikel Arteta’s apparent lack of faith was evident when Gyokeres did not make a Premier League appearance until the third game of the season, and even then he received only a twelve‑minute cameo. His starts have been confined to cup competitions, leaving his league minutes virtually non‑existent.

Arsenal woes and tactical contrast

Swedish national team manager Graham Potter has built a 4‑4‑2 around Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, allowing the Swede to stay high and focus solely on scoring. Playing beside Isak, who thrives in build‑up play, has highlighted the disparity between the level of opposition Sweden face – only Poland sits above them in their Nations League group – and the quality of Premier League sides.

Early in the break, Kai Havertz suffered a hamstring injury that could keep him out of Arsenal’s first match back, theoretically opening a door for Gyokeres. Yet Potter’s confidence in Gyokeres at international level does not guarantee he will translate that form into Arsenal’s system, and a relapse into struggle remains likely. He even broke a record previously held by a Manchester United striker.

In short, Gyokeres’ Sweden surge has turned him into an ‘Ikea Gerd Muller’, but Arsenal supporters must decide whether that brilliance can ever be replicated on the Premier League stage.
