Vestergaard hangs up his boots after 34 years of towering defence
A solitary image of the 199‑centimetre defender in a Leicester City shirt, captured by Getty Images, underscores the end of an era. Former Denmark centre‑back Janik Vestergaard, 34, announced on the 2nd that he is hanging up his boots after a career spanning the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
Vestergaard rose through Brentford’s academy before featuring for Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Southampton and Leicester. He amassed 185 Bundesliga appearances and 100 Premier League matches, sharing the Southampton midfield with Maya Yoshida and Takumi Minamino.
He earned his first Denmark cap in August 2013 and went on to collect 58 caps, playing at Euro 2016 and Euro 2020, the latter culminating in a semi‑final run.
After five seasons with Leicester, he left the club this summer and remained unattached despite offers from Germany and England. Speaking to Politiken, he explained, “I feel a sort of fullness; my motivation is not just low, it is almost gone.”
