Very unexpected call-up: Klopp selects Keidel alongside Stegen

On Thursday afternoon, Jürgen Klopp was in the press room and unveiled his very first squad as Germany's national team coach, a list that immediately sparked debate. With surprising names, including the established goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen and the unexpected right‑back Felix Keidel, he set the tone for the upcoming Nations League‑matches.

Klopp selected, among others, Marc ter Stegen for the Nations League‑matches. The German goalkeeper then returns to Ajax, giving other keepers the chance to prove themselves against the national coach.

Biggest surprise: Felix Keidel

The biggest surprise was Felix Keidel of SV Elversberg. The right‑back, who has played only four matches at the highest level for Germany, makes his debut in the national squad with this.

The call‑up was not entirely unexpected; and it was reported on Wednesday that Keidel would be selected by Klopp.

Klopp, former coach of, among others, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, expressed his displeasure about the leaks: “It is really pathetic to make money by leaking a list of players who are about to be called up.”

He continued: “I spoke with Keidel about the fact that the information had already been leaked and how the past seventeen hours had been for him. That is quite strange. By the way, I don’t care that it was leaked. I just think it’s sad. Anyway.”

Klopp makes his debut on September 24 as national coach when Germany face the Dutch national team. The the Oranje opponent will later in the Nations League also play against Greece and Serbia.
