Vega challenges Infantino for FIFA presidency in 2025

Swiss former footballer Ramon Vega, 55, has announced that he is standing as a candidate for the FIFA presidency in 2025. The former defender and 23‑time international is the first to officially challenge incumbent chairman Gianni Infantino in the election that will take place next year.

Successful club career

Vega won the Swiss championship three times with Grasshopper. He captured the Scottish title with Celtic. In four years at Tottenham Hotspur he secured one League Cup.

“My goal is clear: to serve football and the people who bring the sport to life,” said the 55‑year‑old Vega. He voiced these words at a press conference where he outlined his candidacy. His mission is to reunite the global football family and implement lasting reforms.

After his retirement Vega began a career in the financial sector, where he held various positions. He worked, among others, at an international bank and later founded his own consultancy.

Vega has shown interest in the FIFA presidency in 2015, 2019 and 2022. This time his chances appear greater, as Infantino recently came under heavy criticism after the withdrawn World Cup share plan.

The presidential election will take place on 18 March during the FIFA congress in Rabat, Morocco. So far no other candidate is known. The European governing body UEFA will hold a congress tomorrow in Berlin and also intends to put forward a candidate, but must arrange this before 19 November.

Vega hopes to reunite the worldwide football family, modernise FIFA for the 21st century and restore the trust that the sport desperately needs. He believes structural reforms are necessary to bring back stability and credibility.
