Veerman's eventful debut at Dortmund ends in a 2-2 draw

Joey Veerman had a very eventful cameo on Friday evening for Borussia Dortmund against Werder Bremen and provided his first Bundesliga‑assist, but later also became responsible for the equaliser that saw the match finish 2-2.

Substitution appearance and first contribution

The Dutchman started on the bench and came on in the 72nd minute for Jobe Bellingham. Twelve minutes later he delivered a curling corner to Nico Schlotterbeck, who headed Dortmund to 2-0.

Late stage and critical errors

The lead did not hold; Ludovit Reis brought Werder back into the game in the 88th minute. Shortly before the end Veerman caused a free kick by fouling Mitchell Weiser, after which Niclas Füllkrug headed the equaliser.

Several German media gave Veerman a rating of 4 on their scale, where 1 is the highest. Ran praised his ball contacts and the assist, but criticised his late defensive effort on the second goal.

BVBWLD described the evening as “rather unlucky” and emphasized that the midfielder provided no defensive cover in the closing stages. The media also attributed to him the decisive free kick and the subsequent yellow card.

Ruhr24 gave no rating due to the limited playing time, but also pointed to his role in the equaliser, while the assist to Schlotterbeck was not forgotten.

Coach Niko Kovac had preferred Bellingham and Marcel Sabitzer for the match, but Veerman still got the chance to show his impact, both positive and negative.
