Vanhoutte’s quiet influence steadies Feyenoord’s midfield balance

Journalist Martijn Krabbendam notes that Belgian midfielder Charles Vanhoutte prefers to let his play speak for him at Feyenoord, yet his understated presence underpins Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, offering a stark contrast between anonymity and influence.

Technisch director Dévy Rigaux targeted a player who could safeguard balance alongside Oussama Targhalline. He recalled knowing Charles for years and praised his winning mentality, Dutch‑language fluency and foreign experience as a perfect fit for the role.

Vanhoutte himself asked about the squad’s character rather than money, wanting to know from Dévy whether the team would learn, double‑down and give everything both as a person and a footballer.

Van Bronckhorst values the defensive midfielder’s control daily; while Targhalline plays on instinct, Vanhoutte monitors the organisation, often initiating play with a short pass to Gjivai or Luciano, keeping the team’s shape intact.

Statistical edge

With 38 ball recoveries, Vanhoutte tops the Eredivisie list for Feyenoord, a figure that underlines his contribution to the collective.

Rigaux likens him to former PSV midfielder Timmy Simons, recalling how the Belg sparked intensity at Union Sint‑Gillis and now brings that same drive to Rotterdam, insisting Charles is about winning together, not individual glory.
