Van Dijk utter nonsense as he denies shaping Dutch World Cup tactics
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has flatly dismissed the suggestion that he altered the Netherlands’ tactical set‑up at the World Cup, calling the allegation “completely baseless” and “utter nonsense” during a press conference in Amsterdam and defending the coaching staff’s decisions.
Van Dijk rejects tactical influence claims
He told Dutch reporters that suggestions he had driven a switch to a back five were “utter nonsense”. Van Dijk added that the tactical plan was devised by the coaching staff, not by him, and that the team simply failed at the tournament.
When asked about a journalist’s claim that the idea to play with five defenders was his, Van Dijk replied, “One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense.” He also noted the plan worked for 89 minutes before the match collapsed.
Ronald Koeman stepped down as the Netherlands’ head coach after the side’s last‑16 loss to Morocco, a defeat that prompted the defender’s comments. The 35‑year‑old Van Dijk, who captains both Liverpool and the Dutch national team, said the notion that he “destroyed Dutch football” is completely unfounded.
Future role and cap milestone under new coach
Looking ahead, Van Dijk could feature in the Netherlands’ four upcoming Nations League fixtures – against Germany, Greece and two matches versus Serbia – which would see him reach the landmark of 100 international caps.
After the penalty‑shoot‑out defeat to Morocco, the defender considered stepping back from international duty but decided to stay following a meeting with new boss Xavi, whose appointment was confirmed last month.
He explained, “I needed a holiday with my family and then an important meeting with the national coach; after ten seconds it was already clear that I would continue.” Van Dijk said the coach’s reassurance centred on trust, appreciation and his physical readiness.
With his commitment reaffirmed, Van Dijk remains available for the forthcoming Nations League games, where he hopes to add to his cap tally and help the Dutch side rebuild.
