Van Dijk rebuts Dutch media claims after World Cup exit

Virgil van Dijk has taken to the press to reject Dutch media accusations that he undermined Ronald Koeman’s tactics at the 2026 World Cup, after the Netherlands were eliminated on penalties by Morocco in the round of 32, a result that prompted the Dutchman to contemplate international retirement.

Van Dijk dismisses the allegations

“That is utter nonsense. The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup,” the Liverpool captain said, adding that the team’s performance was a collective shortfall, not his own. “It’s not about me. You perform together. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup is completely baseless.” He also refuted a colleague’s suggestion that he had pushed a back‑five formation, calling the narrative “nonsense … spread so that I look even worse.”

The Netherlands collected seven points from three Group F games, with Cody Gakpo scoring in the 72nd minute before Morocco equalised in the 91st. Against Morocco they took fewer shots, drew more fouls, won fewer set‑pieces and completed just 371 passes compared with the opposition’s 879. Their expected goals stood at 0.24 versus Morocco’s 1.38, and they missed three penalties against keeper Bono.

Van Dijk noted that the plan devised by the staff worked for 89 minutes, despite the “bad match” ending in a penalty shoot‑out loss. He said the media narrative that he “destroyed Dutch football” was “absolutely no sense” and that he had not decided any tactical shift.

New boss Xavi Hernandez convinced the 35‑year‑old to continue with the national side, with van Dijk recalling that “after 10 seconds of meeting with Xavi it was already clear that I would continue.” The Spanish manager told him, “You are Virgil van Dijk – it is about trust, appreciation and how important you are for the team.” Van Dijk said the reassurance helped him feel valued after a demanding North American Nations League tournament.

The Netherlands will return to Nations League action against Serbia on Sunday, but Brian Brobbey will be absent and the final Dutch call‑up remains unknown.
