Van den Brom hails Drommel signing as Twente seek new goalkeeper edge

FC Twente have completed the signing of 29‑year‑old goalkeeper Joël Drommel, who finalised his transfer to the De Tukkers earlier this week, according to trainer John van den Brom. The move was announced on Wednesday during a press conference.

Van den Brom explained that the club identified the need for an additional goalkeeper from day one, stating that “it has been clear from day one that we need an extra goalkeeper”. He added that Drommel’s qualities differ from those of the current keeper.

The new arrival will have to compete with fellow goalkeeper Lars Unnerstal for the starting spot. Van den Brom noted that Unnerstal will retain his place for the immediate future, as Drommel has only trained twice so far.

According to the trainer, Drommel must now demonstrate his abilities in training sessions and practice matches to earn his place. He emphasized that the on‑field performance will determine the hierarchy between the two keepers.

Van den Brom also indicated that Drommel’s debut is unlikely to come on Thursday in the Conference League first‑round tie against Slovak DAC 1904. The match is scheduled for the upcoming pre‑season round of the competition.

Overall, the signing provides Twente with a fresh goalkeeping option while creating healthy competition within the squad, and the club will assess Drommel’s progress in the coming weeks.
