Van Bommel keeps tabs on Barça prodigy as Bisiwu weighs Belgium

Mark van Bommel says he is watching 18‑year‑old winger Jesse Bisiwu closely after the youngster left Club Brugge for FC Barcelona last summer for roughly ten million euros, despite never having logged an official minute for the Belgian side, and now features for Jong Belgium while his senior international allegiance remains undecided.

International future and U21 role

Jesse Bisiwu is currently part of the Jong Belgium (Jong België) squad, the under‑21 side. He remains eligible for Ghana, the country of his heritage, as well as Belgium. He told RTL Club he will not comment further until a decision is made, adding his focus is on the three upcoming U21 matches.

Belgium U21 coach Gil Swerts has already selected Bisiwu for the squad. Swerts’ side secured a 1‑0 victory over Belarus on Thursday. The team now prepares for qualification games against Wales and Denmark.

Mark van Bommel, the Belgian national team Bondscoach, confirmed he has been in contact with the Barcelona talent. “I have spoken with Mark van Bommel. He told me he follows me closely and that we will see what the future brings,” Bisiwu said. Van Bommel’s monitoring reflects the senior coach’s interest in the youngster’s development.

Rumours from certain quarters suggested Bisiwu might opt for Ghana, sparking debate among Belgian observers. The speculation intensified after his high‑profile summer transfer.

The 18‑year‑old winger’s move from Club Brugge to FC Barcelona was completed for a fee of around ten million euros. He left Brugge without ever appearing in an official senior match for the club.
