Van Basten cheers Feyenoord and PSV while Spanish hires sting Ajax

Former Dutch star Marco van Basten criticised the new direction of both the KNVB and Ajax, noting that a Spanish coach has been installed in Zeist and another in Amsterdam, while he celebrates the strong performances of Feyenoord and PSV and laments watching Ajax struggle.

In Zeist the Dutch football association appointed Xavi Hernández, and in Amsterdam Ajax hired Míchel Sanchez, marking the first time since Rinus Happel in the 1970s that the Netherlands national team (Oranje) is led by a foreign manager. Both appointments were described as Spanish hires.

Van Basten told Radio JOE on the Coen & Sander Show, “I would prefer a Dutch coach. We should be able to produce one in the Netherlands. He was a good player, though.” His comment underscored a desire for home‑grown leadership.

Xavi Hernández echoed a similar sentiment, saying, “I would rather have a Dutch coach, but if we cannot find one for the group, then we are not doing something right.” The remark highlighted concerns about the Dutch coaching pipeline.

Van Basten expressed delight at the good form of Feyenoord and PSV, adding that he was pleased to see Dutch athletes like Max Verstappen perform well yesterday, which lifts his spirits.

He described Ajax’s situation as “terrible,” saying, “It hurts to watch Ajax struggle, while Feyenoord and PSV succeed. I hope we all do well in the Netherlands and that people enjoy sport.”

When asked about a possible role with the federation, Van Basten replied, “No, absolutely not. I am completely done with football. I will do other things and watch from a distance, but I still believe in Dutch sport.”
