Valley incident: Charlton Athletic backs police on 33-year-old death

Police launched an investigation after a 33-year-old man was found dead at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley stadium on Tuesday morning, with Metropolitan Police confirming he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service responded following concerns for his welfare.

Police response and investigation

Officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service were called to The Valley stadium in south‑east London on Tuesday morning after concerns for the welfare of a person. The Metropolitan Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed and are receiving support.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that the man fell from height in the early hours of Monday morning, treating the death as unexpected as inquiries continue.

Charlton Athletic confirmed the club is supporting police with their investigation following the discovery. A spokesperson for the Championship club said everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to express their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the individual's family, friends and loved ones.

The club added there was no suggestion of any wrongdoing on its part and thanked its staff for their professionalism in dealing with a particularly difficult and distressing situation.
