Valladolid sign Ito, Belgian clubs fall behind after weeks-long hunt

DONE DEAL: the Japanese attacking midfielder Ryotaro Ito, who signs with Real Valladolid until 30 June 2027, chooses an adventure in the Spanish second division, while both STVV and KAA Gent have been chasing the free‑transfer player for weeks now.

Belgian clubs chase Ito

STVV, where Ito previously played, took the first step and made it clear that they wanted to bring the Japanese midfielder back. Shortly thereafter KAA Gent entered the picture and both clubs emphasized their desire to add the attacker to their forward line.

However, the interest from the Belgian sides came too late. Ito decided to take a different route and signed with Real Valladolid, leaving the two clubs empty‑handed regarding the player.

For Ito, the choice was a search for security and regular playing time, something he could not guarantee in the Belgian league. His earlier failed transfer to Blackburn Rovers and the interest from Celta de Vigo underline the international attention on his talent.

Ito's career and Valladolid‑deal

The 28‑year‑old Japanese player began his development at Avanti Kansai FC, Cerezo Osaka and Tsuyama Sakuyo High School, after which he played for several Japanese clubs – Urawa Reds, Mito Hollyhock, Oita Trinita and Albirex Niigata – in both the first and second divisions. In 2024 he made his debut for Japan's senior national team.

In the summer of 2023 Ito made the move to Europe to play for Sint‑Truiden in the Belgian top flight. Over three seasons he amassed 110 appearances, scored 19 goals and provided 12 assists, including 10 goals and 5 assists in the most recent season.

Real Valladolid welcomes him as a free‑transfer signing with a contract until 30 June 2027, in which he is expected to bolster the attack. On his first day as a Blanquivioleta he visited the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara in Tordesillas, a former fourteenth‑century palace built by Alfonso XI.
