Valencia set a fitness deadline for Liverpool's Harvey Elliott

According to reports, 23‑year‑old Harvey Elliott has moved from Liverpool to Valencia on loan, but the Spanish club has labelled him overweight and imposed a deadline for him to regain fitness. The midfielder has already featured three times as a substitute, totalling 85 minutes, as Valencia prepares to decide his future.

Early promise and setbacks

Elliott was earmarked as a future star while progressing through the academy at Fulham before signing for Liverpool in 2019. His technical ability and vision earned him early praise within the Reds’ setup.

A serious ankle injury in September 2021 stalled his development and he later fell down the pecking order under former manager Arne Slot. Nevertheless, he shone on the international stage, being named Player of the Tournament as England lifted the 2025 U21 European Championships.

In the 2023‑24 season Elliott joined Aston Villa on loan with an obligation to buy for £35 million if certain conditions were met. He managed only nine appearances across all competitions, prompting Villa to decline triggering the purchase clause.

Liverpool appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach in the summer, offering Elliott a potential fresh start. Iraola told reporters in July, “Harvey is here with us. I’ve seen him with this eagerness to show himself. He will have a chance during pre‑season.”

Valencia loan and fitness ultimatum

Instead, the club sent him to La Liga side Valencia, where he has made three substitute appearances, accumulating 85 minutes. His minutes came against Barcelona (36), Sevilla (28) and Real Sociedad (21), while he did not feature at all against Alavés.

Spanish outlet claimed Elliott arrived out of shape, describing him as “well overweight for his physique” and far from his previous form. The report added that he has been given a deadline to get fit, effectively turning the next three weeks into a personalised preseason.

Club insiders suggest Liverpool are prepared to accept a substantial loss on the £100 million‑plus player next season. The situation underscores the challenges the Reds face in recouping value from a talent once hailed as a future star.
