Uproar at Ruhrstadion: Bundesliga opener halted by safety banner
Uproar erupted in the 2. Bundesliga when the opening match of the 2026/27 season at Bochum’s Ruhrstadion was halted after just over 15 minutes of play. Referee Wolfgang Haslberger stopped the game following a protest banner displayed by Hertha fans that blocked an emergency exit.
The ball began rolling, marking the first kickoff of the new campaign, but the early excitement was cut short by the safety concern.
The stadium announcer explained that the banner was hanging over an emergency exit gate, a problem that has become all too familiar in Bochum. Officials deemed the obstruction a breach of safety regulations.

After two public announcements, Haslberger instructed both teams to move to the edge of the pitch and formally suspended the match. Players complied while officials prepared to address the issue.
Approximately five minutes later, discussions near the away end led to the banner’s removal by the Hertha supporters. With the exit cleared, the referee declared the situation resolved.
Play resumed shortly after the resolution, allowing the match to continue beyond the initial interruption. No further incidents were reported for the remainder of the opening fixture.
