Update sees Chelsea drop free‑agent pursuit of Bissouma and Wijnaldum

Chelsea have been linked with former Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma and former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, both free agents after leaving their clubs at the end of the 2025/26 season, but a Sun Report says the Blues will not pursue either signing.

Free‑agent offers and Chelsea's decision

Chelsea were reportedly offered the chance to sign Bissouma, who is currently a free agent. The club also received interest in Wijnaldum, the former Liverpool midfielder. Both players departed their respective clubs when the 2025/26 campaign concluded.

Bissouma was said to be tempted by a short‑term deal to remain in the Premier League. His availability has also attracted interest from Ajax and Monaco, according to the same report.

Chelsea’s midfield depth has been thin since the departure of Enzo Fernandez, yet the Blues appear reluctant to sign free agents lacking recent club affiliation. The Sun Report suggests the club prefers to rely on existing options rather than gamble on Bissouma or Wijnaldum.

During his spell at Tottenham, Bissouma struggled to replicate the promise he showed at Brighton, leading many to view his recent form as disappointing. Adding him to Xabi Alonso’s squad at Stamford Bridge therefore offers limited upside.

Wijnaldum, now in his mid‑30s, has been playing in Saudi Arabia and would need to make a significant impact to aid a Chelsea side with title ambitions. Such a contribution is considered a tall order for a player of his age.

It remains possible that another English club could move to snap up Bissouma, given his desire to stay in the Premier League. No concrete offers have been confirmed at the time of reporting.

For Chelsea, the decision means continuing with midfield options such as Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Jordan Henderson, while Bissouma and Wijnaldum stay on the market seeking new contracts.
