United’s summer spend fuels January urgency as three deals loom

United’s summer spend fuels January urgency as three deals loom

Manchester United will approach the January window with urgency, according to reporter Ben Jacobs, after a summer that saw the Red Devils spend £155 million on midfield reinforcements and add Karl Darlow on a free deal, while still eyeing a new centre‑forward such as Jean‑Philippe Mateta.

Summer overhaul reshapes midfield

Man Utd overhauled their midfield in the summer, signing Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £155 million. Baleba’s fee was reported as £35 million, £48.5 million, £50 million or £70 million, reflecting divergent sources. Santos arrived for a fee reported at £50 million, while Tielemans was secured for £35 million. The club also spent £163 million in total to bring in five new players, including an £8 million deal for 18‑year‑old winger Tynan Thompson.

Left‑back dilemma persists

Karl Darlow joined on a free transfer, becoming the backup for Senne Lammens after Luke Shaw’s injury record raised concerns. United did not sign a specialist left‑back, despite the need, and Baleba has rarely featured in that position. Patrick Dorgu is viewed more as a left midfielder, while Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are comfortable at left‑back but are not elite options.

“For United, I think they’re going to have urgency in January,” Ben Jacobs said. “If they don’t move in January and they leave everything until the summer, that could have a really detrimental knock‑on effect on the second half of this season.”

January targets and price gaps

Lewis Hall remains United’s top left‑back target, though a move has been postponed until next summer. Should the position become a problem, the club could revive interest in Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde or activate Jorge Salinas’ exit clause, which was reported at £14 million, €16 million and £35 million. Jean‑Philippe Mateta is an option if Joshua Zirkzee departs, and Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic has also been linked.

United rejected Everton’s late approach for Zirkzee on deadline day, and the striker’s future is expected to be revisited in January. The club also plan to reignite talks for Leicester City midfielder Louis Page; they were prepared to pay £10 million, but Leicester raised the ask to £12 million plus £3 million in bonuses, prompting United to walk away.

The contrast between a £155 million summer overhaul and the pressing January agenda highlights United’s need to plug gaps left by missed targets such as Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. With the window reopening, the Red Devils are likely to act swiftly to secure a left‑back and a centre‑forward before the season’s second half intensifies.
