United’s financial muscle could force Spanish club to lose midfielder

Manchester United are prepared to use their financial strength to jeopardise a Spanish club’s hold on a midfielder, while the Red Devils have also set a price tag for one of their own stars. United have already added three midfielders this summer – Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba – but a crowded midfield means further moves are likely.

Midfield congestion and a possible exit

Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba join a squad already featuring Kobbie Mainoo, creating a surplus of talent in the centre of the park. Baleba has yet to make his first competitive appearance, underscoring the depth United now possess.

Reports suggest United have been monitoring Sevilla loanee Youssouf Fofana, who is playing both home and away this season. Sevilla cover only a small portion of the Frenchman’s salary from his loan from AC Milan, and covering the full cost is described as ‘unattainable’ for the Spanish side.

Potential sale of a Red Devils star

United have also set a price for striker Benjamin Sesko, demanding €75million (£64m) from any interested club. This figure is below the amount United paid for the Slovenian in the summer of 2025, though it is unclear whether Barcelona or Juventus would meet the valuation.

In the striker department, Igor Matanovic is attracting attention after being linked internally at Old Trafford. Arsenal and Chelsea have both watched the 6ft 5in Freiburg forward this season. He is now valued at £50million, after earlier suggestions that his fee could have been closer to £30million.

Quotes and next steps

A source told the outlet, “Matanovic looks like someone who’s really ready to explode this season. He’s 23 now, entering his prime, and he knows clubs have been looking at him. He’d be open to moving to England if the offers come in.” Freiburg are not expected to block a move if their demands are satisfied.

United’s ability to cover full salaries and meet high transfer fees means Spanish clubs such as Sevilla could find it difficult to retain their loan players, while the Red Devils continue to shape a midfield capable of competing on multiple fronts.
