United’s defensive crisis could be eased by Brentford’s Collins, says Strachan
Manchester United’s defence has been under fire after a dismal start to the Premier League, yet former midfielder Gordon Strachan believes the answer lies in Brentford’s centre‑back Nathan Collins – a contrast between criticism and a clear recruitment target.
Defence under fire
Michael Carrick’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in five league games, managing only one win and five points. The Red Devils’ back four – Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot – is presented as experienced, but the lack of summer reinforcements, especially at left‑back, has drawn surprise.
Strachan backs Collins
Strachan, who made over 200 appearances for Manchester United in the 1980s, says United must add a centre‑back and points to Brentford’s 25‑year‑old Nathan Collins as a viable option. He acknowledges Collins is not a marquee name, yet praises the Republic of Ireland international as a “top centre‑half”.
Arsenal aims to poach BVB's target Josh King from Premier League
Collins joined Brentford from Wolves in 2023, became captain after Christian Norgaard’s departure to Arsenal, and has been a regular at the heart of the Bees’ defence. The Irishman arrived for £23 million and, with a contract running to 2029 after a six‑year deal and a two‑year extension option, would likely fetch a profit if sold.
"I think the problem for Michael Carrick is the defence," the former Scotland boss told Grosvenor Sport. "You don’t have to scour the world when it’s right in front of you." He added that United need a solid back line to challenge for the Champions League or Premier League.
Strachan’s endorsement highlights a stark contrast: United’s current back four is criticised for its fragility, while a proven, reasonably priced centre‑back sits merely a short flight away. If United act on the suggestion, the defensive narrative could shift before the season’s second half.
