United’s chase of Ederson Atalanta stalls over £35 million fee

Manchester United’s bid to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Serie A side Atalanta collapsed after a £35 million fee was agreed but a full medical raised injury concerns, prompting the English giants to pull the plug and leaving the 27‑year‑old to sign a new contract extending his stay in Italy beyond 2027.

United have identified midfield depth as a summer priority after the departure of Casimiro and a long‑term injury to Manuel Ugarte left a clear void. The Red Devils view a robust midfield as essential for a season with multiple competitions.

Targeting a versatile Brazilian, the club eyed Ederson to plug the gap left by the missing midfielders. His ability to operate in several midfield roles matched United’s need for quality and depth.

A £35 million fee was at the centre of Ederson’s aborted move to Manchester United, but the transfer collapsed after a full medical raised injury concerns, prompting the English giants to pull the plug. The deal had been reached under Michael Carrick’s oversight, yet the medical report forced United to abandon it.

United have indicated they could revive interest later in the transfer window, and any renewed bid would not be bound by the original £35 million terms. The club has already secured midfielders Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, while still scouting a third midfielder such as Roma’s Manu Kone, as well as a left‑back and a left winger.

Ederson’s new contract with Atalanta extends his stay beyond the previous deal that ran until 2027, ensuring the Serie A side retain the Brazilian midfielder. For United, the collapse means the midfield vacancy remains, keeping the search for a suitable replacement open.
