United chase £50m striker as Fernandes discloses Ronaldo talk
Manchester United have confirmed they are monitoring Croatian striker Igor Matanovic, valued at up to £50 million, while midfielder Bruno Fernandes disclosed a private conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese icon’s abrupt walkout from the national team. United host Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday as they seek to reverse a bleak start.
United eye £50m Croatian striker
Igor Matanovic, the 23‑year‑old 6‑foot‑5 forward, has attracted United’s interest after helping Freiburg reach last season’s Europa League final, where they were beaten by Aston Villa. Freiburg have raised his valuation from £30m to £50m and United are discussing a possible offer in January 2027 or next summer.
The story, written by Mark Whiley for Sport, was accompanied by View and Images. Arsenal and Chelsea are also credited with interest, and the Croatia international has scored two goals in 14 caps for his country.
Top prospect JJ Gabriel is reportedly pushing to leave Old Trafford, adding another layer to the squad’s off‑field turbulence.
Fernandes shares Ronaldo’s private message
Bruno Fernandes revealed he spoke to Cristiano Ronaldo – referred to as Cris in the chat – after the 41‑year‑old left the Portugal camp following a bust‑up with head coach Jorge Jesus and being an unused substitute in a 2‑1 away win over Norway.
Ronaldo posted on Instagram that he would “in due course tell all the Portuguese people the truth” and Fernandes said the former star remains “the greatest symbol of our national team and country”.
The Portuguese legend’s future with the national side remains uncertain ahead of the final Nations League group matches in November against Denmark and Wales.
Michael Carrick’s side host Tottenham on Saturday at Trafford, looking to lift the growing air of negativity around Old Trafford. United have recorded only one Premier League victory, have lost the derby and been dumped out of the Carabao Cup, leaving them needing three points before a tough Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.
Fans are increasingly disgruntled and pressure on Carrick is mounting as the club strives to end a disappointing start to the campaign. MAN and UTD supporters hope the signings will lift spirits.
