Union SG scramble for keeper as Premier League suitors emerge

Union SG face a looming void between the posts after Nederlandse goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen draws concrete interest from Premier League clubs, leaving the Belgian side desperate to replace the 2.06‑metre shot‑stopper who has been a key figure since arriving last summer.

Scherpen is under contract with Union Saint‑Gilloise until June 2028, and Transfermarkt values him at eight million euros. De club hopes to maximise the fee, with forty percent of any future transfer amount earmarked for Brighton & Hove Albion. Union aims to sell him at the highest possible price.

Ipswich Town and Leeds United have both submitted concrete interest in the 26‑year‑old keeper. Ipswich, the newly promoted Premier League side, have already reached a personal agreement with Scherpen.

During his sole season at Het Dudenpark, Scherpen featured in 43 matches across all competitions, conceding 38 goals and keeping 21 clean sheets. He also helped Union SG lift the Belgian Cup, establishing himself as a pivotal figure.

The Dutch international previously played for Brighton, departing in July 2025, and has had loan spells at Sturm Graz, Vitesse Arnhem, Oostende, as well as stints with Ajax and his hometown club FC Emmen. SC Freiburg in Germany is also reported to be monitoring his situation.

Union SG must secure a replacement before the season kicks off, with the Belgian Supercup scheduled for 31 July and the league opener against Westerlo on 8 August. Further fixtures include clashes with Zulte Waregem on 15 August, city rivals Anderlecht on 20 August, and early Champions League qualifying rounds.

While the transfer remains unresolved, Union SG faces the challenge of balancing a swift replacement with the player’s own preferences, as Scherpen’s desire to move could influence negotiations. The summer window will be crucial for both parties.
