UK minister warns Manchester City of possible Premier League expulsion

Manchester City faces the gravest threat in its history as an independent commission accuses it of financial fraud, while the club insists the allegations are unfounded and prepares an appeal before the 2 October deadline. Independent commission finds serious breaches

The independent commission concluded that Manchester City committed grave breaches of financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. It said the club used contracts deemed fictitious with commercial partners to artificially inflate revenue and lower costs. The commission also found that City submitted incorrect financial information, concealed the true state of its accounts and exceeded spending limits imposed by the Premier League and UEFA. It highlighted a lack of cooperation from the club during the inquiry.

Possible sanctions and appeal process

The Premier League has not yet defined a penalty, but options under discussion include a fine, points deduction, sporting restrictions, removal of titles and even expulsion from the competition. Lisa Nandy, the UK Culture Secretary, said the "maximum sanction" could be applied, placing expulsion among the possibilities. The independent commission will address the exact sanctions in a separate stage of the process.

"I do not want to get ahead of any appeal process, and they have the right to a fair hearing. But what I would say is that the final sanction is really very serious," Nandy told Channel 5.

Manchester City denies the accusations, claiming it possesses evidence to support its position and will contest the judgment on grounds of legal, principled and factual errors. The club has until 2 October to lodge its appeal.
