UEFA’s Greece committee pushes Wembley aside for 2028 finals
UEFA announced on Tuesday that the hosts for the 2028 and 2029 Champions League and Europa League finals have been fixed, with Germany’s Allianz Arena and Spain’s Nou Camp winning the bids while Wembley’s proposal was turned down. The decision emerged from an executive committee meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Executive committee meets in Greece
The executive committee gathered in Thessaloniki on Tuesday to decide the venues for European football’s most prestigious matches. Officials examined each bid before reaching a verdict that favoured the two continental stadiums.
Nations League format revamped
At the same meeting UEFA confirmed a new Nations League structure that introduces promotion and relegation. The revised format aims to increase competitiveness across the European national‑team landscape.
London had been hoping to host a fourth Champions League final in less than 20 years, but the national stadium’s bid was rejected in favour of the Allianz Arena and the Nou Camp. Wembley’s disappointment underscores UEFA’s shift towards continental venues.
The Allianz Arena and the Nou Camp will now prepare to stage the 2028 and 2029 finals respectively, while UEFA begins logistical planning for the events.
