UEFA imposes three‑match ban on Ethan Mbappé for aggression

Ethan Mbappé, the 19-year-old brother of Kylian Mbappé, is not allowed to play for LOSC Lille in the next three Champions League duels, after UEFA imposed a suspension on him for “unacceptable aggressive behaviour”. The sanction follows a direct red card in the first matchday of the League Phase.

Incident in the League Phase

In the first match of the League Phase, the young Lille player received a red card after less than an hour of play. After a confrontation with Real Betis defender Nathan, Mbappé delivered an elbow strike, prompting the VAR to intervene.

The Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov saw the footage and confirmed the red card. UEFA then confirmed that Mbappé must miss three duels.

Consequences for Lille

Due to the suspension, Ethan Mbappé misses the matches against Arsenal, Galatasaray and FK Bodø/Glimt. LOSC Lille lost that first League Phase match, despite two early leads.

Ayase Ueda, former Feyenoord striker, scored for Lille, but Troy Parrott of Real Betis made the decisive 2‑3 in the 53rd minute, completing Betis's comeback.

Lille could not hold onto the lead and finished with a defeat, while Mbappé's absence further limits the defensive options of the French club.
