U21 triumphs over Malta: Tresoldi secures path to Euro ticket
The German U21 defeated Malta 4-1, bringing the ticket for next summer’s Euro finals almost within reach. Captain Nicolo Tresoldi celebrated after his third goal, which he scored together with Leandro Morgalla. The DFB app showed the match progress live, while the ball kept circling in the German penalty area.
Goals and Scorers
After an early equaliser from Basil Tuma in the 9th minute, the game turned. Tresoldi scored in the 11th, 47th and 69th minute, Tom Rothe added to the score in the 32nd minute. Tresoldi’s hat‑trick therefore accounted for the third, fourth and fifth goals of the German side.
“I am satisfied, even though the game was not outstanding,” said Tresoldi after the win on ProSieben Maxx. “In the end it’s three points and we have scored four goals.”
With goals 14, 15 and 16, Tresoldi now sits only behind Heiko Herrlich (17) and Pierre Littbarski (18) on the DFB’s all‑time list. Coach Antonio Di Salvo must still beat Georgia in Bielefeld on Tuesday to secure the trip to the finals in Albania and Serbia.
After the 4‑0 win in Latvia, Di Salvo reshuffled the team by eight places, but the attacking trio with Tresoldi remained unchanged. The two debutants Max Weiß (Burnley) and Noahkai Banks (Augsburg) were in the spotlight as they faced the lone striker charging at them from the fifth English league.
Leandro Morgalla of FC Salzburg commented on the 1‑0 interim score: “Perhaps the 1‑0 was a wake‑up call.” The ball remained for most of the remaining match in German hands, sealing the clear victory.
