Two-year pact fuels Dundee United’s defence with Romania’s Ciubotaru

Kevin Ciubotaru has signed a two‑year contract, with an option for a further year, with Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, the 22‑year‑old left‑back who left Hermannstadt after 39 appearances and earned his senior Romania debut in a 2‑1 win over Moldova in Bucharest in October. The deal adds a promising international to the club’s defensive options.

Ciubotaru made his Romania debut as a half‑time substitute in a 2‑1 victory over Moldova in Bucharest in October. The appearance added an international cap to his résumé.

He left Hermannstadt after 39 first‑team appearances. The club finished 14th of 16 in the Superliga and were relegated.

He confirmed the move on United’s website. He told United’s website: “As soon as I heard of the interest, it was a move I wanted to make. I’ve lived in Scotland before and having the opportunity to come to this massive club was one I couldn’t pass up.”

United manager Jim Goodwin praised the signing. Goodwin added: “He’s an exciting young full‑back who will add real quality to our defensive options and I’m thrilled he’s chosen to join us. He had a real breakthrough season last campaign, playing close to 40 games in the Romanian top flight whilst also earning his first senior cap.”

Ciubotaru had previously signed a three‑year contract with Hermannstadt after a year at Ibrox. During his time with Hermannstadt, he also spent a spell on loan at Liga 2 side Unirea Ungheni before returning to the Romanian top flight.

Born in Italy, Ciubotaru joined Rangers’ academy in 2022 after spells with Rapid Vienna and Parma. The experience gave him prior exposure to Scottish football and a connection to Scotland.

His arrival comes amid speculation about the sale of Will Ferry. The situation highlights Dundee United’s active position in the transfer market.
