Two Bundesliga Premier strikes and a Coppa goal for Swiss women
In front of 16 500 cheering fans in Mainz, the Swiss legionnaires scored two Bundesliga debut goals over the weekend: Sabina Jackson headed against Frankfurt and Lara Meroni opened the scoring for the Zurich native, while in the Coppa‑Italia Riola Xhemaili netted the decisive goal for Como.
After five matchdays, Mainz still has no points in the Bundesliga. Jackson, who came from FC Basel, used a corner in the 2‑0 phase to score her first Bundesliga goal at the home stadium. Her first Bundesliga goal was also her debut in the league.
Lara Meroni, also from Zurich, scored the consolation goal in the 1‑5 defeat of Nuremberg against HSV. It was also her debut in the Bundesliga, although the team clearly lost the match.
Lia Kamber gave Union Berlin their first points, as she already in the second minute contributed the 1‑0 goal against Leipzig to the 3‑2 home win. The goal came after a mispass by Leipzig goalkeeper Elvira Herzog.
Further Swiss Goals in the Coppa Italia
In the Coppa Italia Riola Xhemaili scored the 2‑1 winning goal for Como against Brescia. With this she continued the series of successful appearances by Swiss players in international competitions.
The Serie‑A season started over the weekend, while the Spanish championship is already underway. Swiss players therefore demonstrate presence in several top‑leagues in Europe.
Sydney Schertenleib, 19, stayed in top form: she was in the starting eleven in each of the first four season matches and scored on Friday in the 6‑0 win against Vitoria‑Gasteiz with her first season goal.
