TV ratings decline despite Klopp hype after 0-0 draw against Greece
The 0‑0 draw of the German national team against Greece, with Jürgen Klopp on the sidelines for the first time, attracted fewer than ten million viewers to the screens. Overall, 9.736 million people watched the match on Sunday evening on RTL, with a market share of 40.2 percent.
Analysis of viewership figures
Compared with the three previous matches under Klopp, which each broke the ten‑million mark, the average fell sharply. In the debut against the Netherlands, 10.76 million viewers were recorded in the second half, while the first‑leg match against Greece in the first round even reached 10.97 million.
The half‑time figures, however, show that the decline was not dramatic: In the first 45 minutes, 9.35 million watched, after the break the reach rose to 10.13 million, with the market share in the second half at 46 percent.
One reason for the lower average may have been the direct competition from the ARD‑Tatort, which simultaneously attracted 5.32 million viewers.
Interest remained especially strong among the young target group: In the second half, RTL achieved a market share of 55.2 percent among 14‑ to 49‑year‑olds.
The figures show that the Klopp boom has indeed received a slight dampening, but the national team remains a guaranteed audience draw.
