Tuchel warns Palmer of missed chances before Spain clash
Thomas Tuchel, the German coach of England, voiced clear frustration on Saturday after Chelsea forward Cole Palmer withdrew from the England camp once again due to injury, just hours before the UEFA Nations League opener against Spain.
Tuchel’s frustration and Palmer’s record
Tuchel told reporters that Palmer “misses too many opportunities”, describing the latest pull‑out as “another missed opportunity”. The forward has now featured in only two of the eight camps called since Tuchel took charge at the start of 2025, and he was omitted from the World Cup squad despite being fit enough to be considered. Palmer’s six goal involvements in his first seven matches for Chelsea earned him a recall for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia, only for him to withdraw injured again.
When asked whether the situation stemmed from managed workload, Tuchel rejected the notion, stating that Palmer “plays with discomfort and pain and cannot play on the highest level with discomfort and pain”. He added that Chelsea had informed the England set‑up, confirming that the issue was not a load‑management decision.

Squad commitment and wider absences
Tuchel used the episode to underline his expectations, declaring “This is not an ‘international break’. It’s a competitive environment, where the players love to train and be together”. He stressed that England will never compromise on commitment and will focus on players who truly want to represent the nation. Besides Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento also pulled out of the original squad for this window.
England captain Harry Kane responded to the spate of withdrawals, insisting that every player is proud to wear the Three Lions and that individual circumstances vary. He said it is up to each player and the coach to discuss and resolve any issues, while the squad remains focused on preparing at the highest level for four games in eleven days.

With a sold‑out Wembley Stadium awaiting the clash, England now turn their attention to the upcoming match against Spain, hoping the remaining squad can deliver a competitive performance despite the recent absences.
