Tuchel warns Alexander‑Arnold to tighten defence after England call‑up
Thomas Tuchel has told Real Madrid right‑back Trent Alexander‑Arnold that he must improve his defensive work after the England manager called him up for the next international fixtures. The German coach said the change is essential if Arnold is to cement his place.
The call‑up has placed the 27‑year‑old back on Tuchel’s radar, but it does not erase a criticism that has followed the player for years. Tuchel remains willing to give him a fresh chance, yet he expects a shift in behaviour when the ball is not at his feet.
Tuchel stresses defensive duty
“He has to do this, it is necessary,” Tuchel said when asked whether Alexander‑Arnold contributes enough defensively. “I am sure he will do it, but he has no choice.” The coach reiterated that the right‑back must add defensive solidity to his already recognised attacking talent.
Since taking charge, Tuchel has only called on the full‑back once, in June last year against Andorra and Senegal. Arnold entered the Andorra match at the 64‑minute mark but failed to secure a place in the World Cup squad and was omitted from the final list.

Arnold’s club form
Arnold’s return to the England set‑up arrives at a time when he is not enjoying a run of prominence at Real Madrid. He started three of the five league games this season, and his performances have largely gone unnoticed.
Nevertheless, Tuchel continues to value what Arnold can deliver with the ball. The right‑back’s reputation rests on his ability to join attacks from deep positions and to find teammates with long, accurate passes – a skill set that keeps him in England’s considerations.
Competition for the England right‑back spot
Tuchel has made clear that Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah sit ahead of Alexander‑Arnold in the hierarchy for the right‑back role, both also selected for fixtures against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Injuries to Reece James, Djed Spence and Ben White have opened a window for Arnold, while defender Ezri Konsa, also in the squad, has previously covered the position.
“He heard the good news about the call‑up. I’m not sure many things have changed. I know what he is capable of. I know his talent. He says he is desperate to play for England and will fight for the shirt. It is a long concentration and a good moment to stand out. It is a chance for Trent to claim his place at right‑back. So, let’s go,” Tuchel added, urging the player to seize the opportunity.
