Tuchel says Manchester City breach is distracting England squad
England manager Thomas Tuchel said the Premier League’s ruling that Manchester City breached financial regulations is affecting his national side, the England squad, the newspaper reported on the 2nd. He acknowledged that the issue has become a major talking point among his players.
The Premier League independent committee announced on 29 September that, between the 2009‑10 and 2017‑18 seasons, Manchester City used a scheme involving fictitious contracts with commercial partners to disguise more than £900 million of cost‑saving funds. The committee described the arrangement as a coordinated effort to mask the money.
Manchester City denied any wrongdoing and on the 2nd confirmed it had lodged a formal appeal against the decision. The club’s response has drawn intense scrutiny over the possible sanctions.
Tuchel told reporters the matter is being discussed at meals, with groups of eight to twelve players talking about it at dinner and breakfast, but he could not say whether it was distracting the team on the pitch. He added that the players are young, ambitious and uncertain about the situation, which naturally fuels conversation.
