Tuchel says City case dominates England camp but not play
England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted on Friday that the Manchester City case – deemed guilty of serious financial breaches – is the dominant topic in the England (Inglaterra) camp, but he insisted it will not affect the team’s performance on the pitch.
Independent commission findings
An independent commission appointed by the Premier League presented its findings early this week, concluding that Manchester City is guilty of more than 100 serious financial irregularities. The report sent shockwaves through English football. The panel described its verdict as a seismic shock to English football.
England squad impact
The sanctions under consideration are severe; the club could face penalties that include relegation from the top division despite its fifteen‑year dominance in the Premier League. The club has been dominant in the Premier League for the past fifteen years, making any relegation unprecedented.
Manchester City denied the allegations and announced on Friday that it will appeal the commission’s decision. The appeal will be lodged with the league's arbitration panel.
Only Marc Guéhi and Elliott Anderson remain in the England camp from Manchester City, after Nico O’Reilly was cut because of injury. Their inclusion keeps the club represented despite the off‑field turmoil.
“The players talk about it, the City players talk about it and we discuss it,” Tuchel told reporters on the eve of the Croatia match. He added that the discussion would not influence the players’ readiness. He added that the squad had shown sharpness in Friday's training session.
When asked whether he would drop City players if the club were relegated, Tuchel replied, “I would always try to pick the best squad for the tournament and would never discard players simply because they are not in the top division.” He said each case would be assessed individually.
England face Croatia in a closed‑door Nations League fixture in Rijeka on Saturday, the third of four matches in the current FIFA window. England lost 3‑2 to Spain in their opener at home and then beat the Czech Republic 2‑0.
