Transport woes delay Chelsea‑Leeds Carabao Cup start by 15 minutes

The kickoff for the Carabao Cup third‑round clash between Chelsea and Leeds United has been pushed back, with the Blues confirming a 15‑minute delay that moves the start time to 8:15 pm instead of the scheduled 8:00 pm, following a last‑minute announcement about transport problems on the London underground.

Transport disruption forces delay

Transport for London later explained that severe delays on the District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines caused the disruption, citing an issue with the rail network and a casualty on the track that required emergency services on Wednesday. The announcement appeared on a screen inside Stamford Bridge, informing fans of the revised timetable.

The Blues admitted the altered timetable gave their players a slight hit to preparation, a point noted in a Getty‑credited statement released by the club. Club officials said they would monitor any further impact on the squad's readiness.

Stamford Bridge’s nearest underground stop, Fulham Broadway, sits on the District line, meaning fans travelling from across London faced additional uncertainty as the line struggled. The disruption also meant traffic around the Fulham area intensified as supporters sought alternative routes.

Chelsea's path to the third round

Chelsea earned their place in the third round after a comfortable 2‑0 victory over League One side Luton Town on 27 August. The win secured Chelsea's progression to face Leeds United in the upcoming tie.

Leeds progressed by beating Nottingham Forest 2‑0 away, with Daniel James and James Justin finding the net. The result placed Leeds into the same round, setting up the London derby.

Blues boss Xabi Alonso, who rested several key figures after a 2‑1 loss to Arsenal, made nine changes to the starting eleven, introducing Mike Penders, Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto, Pep Chavarria, Valentin Barco, Estevao, Jamie Gittens and Danny Welbeck. Alonso's overhaul aimed to preserve fitness ahead of the cup fixture.
