Tottenham weigh cutting Richarlison ties as Turkish deadline looms
Tottenham Hotspur are weighing a contract termination for Brazil forward Richarlison, who has a year remaining on his deal, after a £15m bid from Trabzonspor fell short of the North London club’s expectations, with the Turkish window closing at midnight on Friday, September 4.
Spurs look to cut ties
Spurs have left Richarlison out of their Premier League squad, signalling he is not in the manager’s plans. Roberto De Zerbi has labelled the Brazil international surplus to requirements after summer arrivals Omar Marmoush and Savio pushed him down the pecking order. A Getty image captioned ‘Richarlison no longer needed’ reflected his status at the club.
A return to Everton collapsed late in the transfer window, with Richarlison insisting he would only depart Tottenham on his own terms. He has since agreed terms with Trabzonspor, but the Turkish club’s window closes at midnight on Friday, September 4.
Contract termination implications
’s Ben Jacobs explained the time‑sensitive situation, saying: “Time is running out here. The player has not given a green light to the [Trabzonspor] project yet, but that could change today.” He added that Tottenham are seeking more than the £15m plus add‑ons initially offered.
If Tottenham terminate the contract, Richarlison would become a free agent and could choose a wider pool of suitors, similar to Raheem Sterling’s departure from Chelsea. There is also an outside chance of a mutual termination, echoing Karim Benzema’s exit from Al‑Hilal.
Richarlison joined Tottenham from Everton in the summer of 2022 after spells at Watford, and has scored 32 goals in 134 appearances for the North London club. The 54‑cap Brazilian made what appears to be his final appearance in the season‑opening defeat to Brentford and was an unused substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Charlton.
Spurs finalised their 2026/27 Premier League squad after the transfer window closed, with Richarlison omitted from the list. His exclusion confirms he will not feature in the upcoming Premier League campaign unless a contract termination is agreed.
