Tottenham's January chase for Spanish striker meets Espanyol boss
Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on 24‑year‑old Roberto Fernandez, the Spanish LaLiga forward who has struck six goals in seven games for Espanyol this season, and whose recent 90‑minute appearance in Spain’s 3‑1 win over Czechia has only heightened the club’s January ambitions.
Form fuels Spain call‑up
Fernandez’s six‑goal haul has placed him among the rising stars of Spanish football, prompting national team manager Luis de la Fuente to select him for the international break squad. He started and completed the full match as Spain secured a 3‑1 victory against Czechia. The performance has amplified interest from clubs across Europe.
“I don’t know what might happen or what other clubs might be thinking,” Manolo Gonzalez told Sport. “I think he knows that playing for Espanyol brings him closer to the national team. He gets more consistent playing time here.”
Tottenham’s January target
TEAMtalk revealed that Tottenham’s recruitment team have been instructed to secure a new striker for Roberto De Zerbi, aiming to resolve the club’s goalscoring woes with a January swoop. The English side have been monitoring Fernandez closely, especially after his form this season accelerated their interest.
German clubs are also reported to be watching the Espanyol forward, yet it is Spurs who have kept his development under constant review. Espanyol sporting director Monchi, a former Aston Villa transfer specialist, will be central to any negotiations.
Monchi arrived at Espanyol in the summer as part of owner Alan Pace’s plan to improve the club’s LaLiga standing. Losing Fernandez would represent a major blow to that strategy,
TEAMtalk can also reveal that Tottenham first noticed Fernandez last season, despite him only netting a modest seven goals for the Barcelona‑based outfit. His current season surge has forced a stronger response from the Spanish club.
Gonzalez added, “If someone comes along and pays the release clause and he wants to leave, then we’ll have to look for solutions in the transfer market. But I believe that, as of today, he and the people around him are satisfied—they’re happy here. And Roberto is young.”
