Tottenham's £85m gamble on Savinho reshapes summer spending
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £85million deal for Manchester City winger Savinho – £75m upfront plus £10m in add‑ons – as part of a live Premier League transfer roundup that also saw Everton abandon a pursuit of Manchester United’s 20‑year‑old striker Ethan Wheatley and Arsenal prepare for their season‑opening, with Andoni Iraola set to speak.
Tottenham Hotspur have secured a £85million transfer for Manchester City winger Savinho, consisting of a £75m upfront fee and a further £10m in potential add‑ons. The fee sets a new record sale for Manchester City.
Why Tottenham targeted Savinho
Spurs are looking to reinforce their attacking options after a busy summer that has already pushed total spending beyond £300m. Adding a proven Premier League winger aligns with their ambition to compete on multiple fronts.
The club has already recouped roughly £140m through the departures of Cristian Romero, Djed Spence and Luka Vuskovic, freeing resources for high‑profile acquisitions such as Savinho. The acquisition is expected to provide width and creativity on the flanks.
Everton's financial priorities
Everton withdrew from negotiations for Manchester United’s 20‑year‑old striker Ethan Wheatley as finance remains at a premium and the club aims to secure four first‑team signings elsewhere. An initial fee, add‑ons and a sell‑on clause were reportedly outlined before the pull‑out.
The 6ft 3in England U20 international, who has previously been loaned to Northampton and Bradford, was described by Sport as a future prospect capable of first‑team impact. With Everton redirecting funds, Lincoln City have been mentioned as a possible alternative destination for Wheatley.
Leeds United completed the signing of 18‑year‑old North Macedonian striker Ditmir Hodja from Rabotniçki Skopje after beating competition for his services. Although a free agent, Leeds agreed compensation with Skopje; Hodja, standing 6ft 4ins, has recorded six goals and two assists in eight games and is likened in style to Arsenal’s Kai Havertz.
The Savinho deal bolsters Tottenham’s attacking depth, while Everton’s decision frees budget for other targets and may benefit Lincoln City. Leeds adds a physically imposing forward with a proven scoring record, potentially enhancing their squad for the upcoming season.
