Tottenham’s £50m sale of Luka Vuskovic sparks debate over lost future

Tottenham’s £50m sale of Luka Vuskovic sparks debate over lost future

Tottenham (Spurs) completed a summer transfer that saw Croatian teenager Luka Vuskovic move to Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee that could rise to £50 million. The defender never made a competitive senior appearance for Spurs, despite a promising loan spell in the Bundesliga.

Controversial decision and player response

The sale was described as controversial given Vuskovic’s massive long‑term potential. He addressed the move with a diplomatic tone, telling Sportske Novosti, “I wouldn’t go back to that too much. I appreciate that Tottenham recognised me as a very young player, that they invested in me at the time and that together we found good solutions and clubs where I could play and develop,” adding that he never received a proper breakthrough chance in North London.

Vuskovic also said he would not comment on internal matters, stating, “Coaches, directors, boards and sporting policies change at clubs, and it’s not for me to comment on their decisions.” He made no accusations towards the hierarchy or coaching staff.

Brighton’s early season impact

Since joining the Seagulls, Vuskovic has settled quickly on the south coast, contributing to Brighton’s strong defensive start under manager Fabian Hürzeler. The club have conceded only four goals in their opening stretch of fixtures and recorded a 3‑0 clean‑sheet victory against defending champions Arsenal.

His composure, aerial dominance and comfort on the ball have been cited as justification for the club‑record investment. Many observers now label him one of Europe’s brightest young defensive talents.

Allowing a generational prospect to leave permanently before evaluating him in the first team could potentially haunt Spurs in the future. If Vuskovic continues to develop into a world‑class centre‑back, the decision may be viewed as a missed opportunity.
