Tottenham reject Sunderland loan bid for Danso as defence bolsters

Tottenham Hotspur have turned down Sunderland's season‑long loan request for Austrian centre‑back Kevin Danso, a 27‑year‑old who has made 37 appearances for the club, after his first‑team prospects dwindled following recent defensive signings. The decision was confirmed on Wednesday's Carabao Cup win over Charlton, where Danso entered as a second‑half substitute.

Limited opportunities after new arrivals

Danso's first‑team chances are likely to be limited this season after the signings of central defenders Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, while Micky van de Ven has signed a new contract and been named captain. These moves have tightened the defensive hierarchy at Tottenham Hotspur.

Danso was signed on loan from Lens in January 2025 and the deal was made permanent later that year with Spurs paying the French club £20.9m. The Austria centre‑back has been capped 36 times by Austria since joining the club.

It now remains to be seen whether Sunderland continue their interest in the 27‑year‑old, who has made 37 appearances for Spurs. The club’s lack of playing time could prompt the north‑east side to revisit their pursuit.
