Tottenham Hotspur slip to bottom of table after 2-3 loss to Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur lost on Saturday 2-3 to Aston Villa and slipped before the international break to 20th and last place in the English Premier League. The defeat follows a run of poor results that the team of manager Roberto de Zerbi continues to drive further into crisis.

Financial Expenditures Without Return

In the summer, the Tottenham‑executives allocated over €360 million for new stars. This included the signing of Sandro Tonali from league rival Newcastle United and Matheus Fernandes from arch‑rival West Ham United, for whom a package of €200 million was paid.

According to former international player Joe Cole, the high spending has led to an inflated price structure. Cole criticised after the Villa defeat that “Tottenham pays too much for every new player” and warned of a possible relegation battle.

Data specialists have run simulations with their supercomputer. The results show that Fulham and Coventry must expect relegation probabilities of over 40 percent – 42.4 percent for Fulham and 43.82 percent for Coventry.

Despite winning the 2025 Europa League, Tottenham now sit at the bottom of the table and the forecasts for the Spurs have not become more favourable since the last matchday.

The situation remains tense, as further matches are pending during the international break and the threat of relegation remains real.
