Tottenham honours 1961 double hero Terry Dyson at 91

Former Tottenham winger Terry Dyson, a 1961 double‑winner, has died aged 91. The Premier League club confirmed his death on Thursday, noting his 55 goals in 209 games over a ten‑year spell at Spurs. Dyson’s legacy includes the historic First Division and FA Cup double.

Tottenham issued a statement expressing deep sadness at the loss of their former player. The club said Terry was a key part of the 1961 double‑winning side, having scored in the FA Cup Final. It also recalled his two goals in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final.

Double‑winning 1960‑61 season

Dyson played an integral role under manager Bill Nicholson as the 1960‑61 side became the first 20th‑century English club to achieve a First Division and FA Cup double. His contributions on the wing helped secure the league title and the cup triumph. He featured in the FA Cup Final and found the net, cementing his status as a double‑winner. The achievement remains a cornerstone of Tottenham’s history.

European triumph and hat‑trick legacy

Two years later Dyson delivered a stellar performance in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, scoring twice in a 5‑1 victory over Atletico Madrid to clinch the trophy. The 1963 final highlighted his ability on the continental stage. Earlier, at the start of the 1961‑62 campaign, he became the only Spurs player to record a hat‑trick against Arsenal. That feat featured a header, a left‑foot strike and a right‑foot finish, and it has never been repeated.

After departing Tottenham, the Yorkshireman continued his career with Fulham, Colchester and Guildford, adding experience to each side. His total tally for Spurs remained 55 goals from 209 appearances across all competitions. These numbers underline his consistency over a decade.

Dyson reflected on his hat‑trick in a 2020 interview with the Press Association, describing how a deflected ball struck his hand before he lashed it into the net. He recalled the Arsenal players’ furious reaction and the referee’s obliviousness. The winger said the moment was “brilliant” and that nobody has matched it since.

He also recounted celebrating the hat‑trick with “a few drinks” alongside manager Bill Nicholson, who offered restrained praise. Dyson remembered Nicholson’s comment, “well done,” and added that the night ended with camaraderie. He concluded that the achievement “has gone down in history.”
