Tottenham fails on 21‑million offer for Brazilian defensive talent
Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign the 19‑year‑old centre‑back defensive talent Arthur Dias from Athletico Paranaense in the summer, with the player being on the radar of national teams, and offered €21 million for 80 % of his rights, but the Brazilian club rejected the offer. According to Ge Globo, the deal would have been a step for a club that had already signed a defender from Brazil in the winter with Souza.
Spurs focus on young national‑team talents
After the World Cup, Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian coach, wants to bring fresh impetus to the Seleção by giving new impetus to young players from Brazil. He has several youngsters from the league on his radar, who are already in the preliminary squad for the upcoming international break. Arthur Dias, a 19‑year‑old centre‑back, is considered an important defensive talent for the national team and could quickly become a regular starter there.
Athletico Paranaense, the club that currently employs Dias, has surprisingly fought for the top places of Serie A this season. After the direct promotion in 2025, the club has become one of the biggest surprise teams in the league and is holding onto the young player because he is a key player in the back line.
Consequences for both clubs
The failed transfer means that Tottenham Hotspur must continue searching for a suitable defender from Brazil. The club already completed a similar deal in the winter with Souza, a 20‑year‑old defender from FC Santos, which was for €12 million and he is currently on loan at FC Porto.
For Athletico Paranaense, Dias remains a valuable player who is important not only on the pitch but also financially. The club demanded €30 million, which explains the gap to the Spurs' offer and shows that it is not willing to lose the defensive talent.
Tottenham, however, does not give up; the Spurs have signaled that they will continue to keep an eye on national‑team prospects for young Brazilian defenders and may make further offers.
Arthur Dias is also in the preliminary squad for the upcoming international break, which further increases his attractiveness to European clubs. Should he ultimately join the Spurs, he could become an important link between the Brazilian national team and the Premier League.
