Tottenham defy £50m market to keep Swedish midfielder
Lucas Bergvall has signed a fresh contract with Tottenham Hotspur, extending his stay at the north London club after originally arriving on an £8.5m deal from Djurgården in February 2024. The new agreement, which replaces a deal due to run out in July 2029, comes despite a £50m valuation that had deterred suitors.
Midfield overhaul drives contract decision
The Stockholm-born Swedish midfielder saw his future questioned when Spurs invested heavily in the midfield, bringing in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali for packages that could ultimately fetch as much as a combined £185m (€216m, $251m). Those signings left Bergvall feeling his playing time might be limited, especially with Tottenham lacking European football.
His immediate reaction was to request a move away, and he explored options at Nottingham Forest and a club abroad, while Chelsea made calls on Deadline Day but never submitted a bid. Despite the interest, no agreement materialised, largely because Tottenham set a £50m price tag on the 14‑cap Sweden star.
Tottenham’s commitment to the Swedish midfielder
ON Friday the club announced the extension, stating that despite Bergvall’s desire to leave, Tottenham chose to keep him and offered an improved salary. Fabrizio Romano reported that the decision was driven by the belief that Bergvall fits Roberto De Zerbi’s vision and will be central to the team’s future.
Roberto De Zerbi praised Bergvall’s desire to learn, his bravery and his personality, insisting the player’s best football is still ahead and that the club will give him the platform to reach his full potential.
Lucas said he feels the club is building something great and that he is happy to extend his contract. He added that he aims to produce more performances, goals and assists, and that he is getting better every day in training.
The extension means Tottenham retain one of the Premier League’s most promising young midfielders while Bergvall secures a stable environment to develop his game, aligning the club’s long‑term ambitions with his personal growth.
