Tottenham chase £25m Arne Engels as Bergvall successor

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to push hard for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, the 22‑year‑old valued at around £25 million, as a potential replacement for Lucas Bergvall, with the Swedish midfielder signalling a desire to leave Celtic this summer and join the North London club.

Tottenham’s approach is described as what smart clubs should do at this stage of the market, scanning for value before the obvious option becomes expensive. Lucas Bergvall is reported to be unsettled after the £185 million arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, prompting the need for a successor.

Engels’ profile – young, resale‑value rich and technically sound – fits Tottenham’s replacement search. Celtic are asking roughly £25 million but may accept a fee just short of that amount, reflecting his final 18 months on contract.

Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Sunderland and Crystal Palace have all been monitoring him, while AC Milan, Napoli, Lazio and Borussia Dortmund are also credited with strong interest. He has communicated his desire for a move to Celtic’s board and has switched agents from Wasserman to DWMA to accelerate a summer transfer.

TeamTalk notes that Tottenham’s initial interest has not gone any further at this stage, meaning there is no advanced negotiation or agreement yet. The interest remains credible, but the Spurs have not moved beyond scouting.

Tottenham will need a proper replacement if Bergvall pushes for an exit, rather than a panic buy. Engels offers a sensible fit on paper – age, price and position align with the club’s contingency plans.

For Celtic, a sale would relieve a player who has expressed a desire to leave and could bring a substantial fee before his contract expires. It could also free up space for other midfield options as the club navigates the upcoming transfer window.
