Tottenham CEO backs Italian De Zerbi as Spurs linger bottom

Tottenham Hotspur sit bottom of the Premier League after just two points from five games, yet chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has publicly reaffirmed his support for Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi, signalling the club’s patience despite mounting pressure for a first league win.

Early season woes

Spurs have collected just two points from their opening five Premier League matches, leaving them bottom of the table. De Zerbi is still searching for his first league win, and the side suffered a 3‑0 defeat to Brentford on opening weekend.

Speaking at a Fan Advisory Board meeting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week, Venkatesham insisted he remained confident that De Zerbi will turn things around. He noted encouraging signs of improvement since the opening‑day loss.

The CEO highlighted that, despite the comprehensive 3‑0 loss to Brentford, aspects of the underlying performances have been positive. He praised the work underway behind the scenes and the players brought in over the summer.

Venkatesham stressed that the significant changes made during the summer – both on and off the pitch – will require time to produce full results. He acknowledged that the club must be patient while the revamped squad settles.

He also praised the excellent backing from supporters at home and away, saying it would not be taken for granted. Yet he warned that belief must be earned through tangible results on the field.

Despite the public vote of confidence, pressure on De Zerbi remains immense. Having spent heavily in the summer transfer window, the board expects a swift return on investment and a rapid improvement in points.

Looking ahead to United clash

Venkatesham warned that the demanding fixtures after the international break begin with a crucial trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. He stressed that De Zerbi must translate the underlying performance metrics into points to steady the ship in North London.
