Time running out for Lazio’s Flaminio revamp as August deadline looms

The week of 10‑13 August has become the most crucial period since Lazio unveiled its Flaminio stadium renovation plan, with the Preliminary Services Conference slated to finish and potentially trigger the Municipality of Rome’s recognition of the project’s public interest.

The conference, running from Monday 10 to Thursday 13 August, is expected to conclude the preliminary Services Conference, a step that could lead the Municipality of Rome to formally acknowledge the public interest of the work.

A decisive element still hangs in the balance: the opinion of the State Superintendency on the historic‑artistic constraint that weighs on the venue.

After weeks of technical exchanges, officials have concentrated on safeguarding the original canopy designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and on delivering the second suspended ring outlined in Lazio’s plan, and the current orientation appears favourable.

Corriere dello Sport describes this as a fundamental crossroads for the entire process; the municipality awaits the State Superintendency’s ruling before it can formally declare public interest, the first true administrative milestone.

Once the green light is given, the dossier will move to the municipal council and later to the Capitol Assembly for the further steps required by stadium legislation.

Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi warned that the situation is frustrating and urged swift action. «Sul Flaminio la prima cosa da dire è che è frustrante parlarne nell’auspicio che tutto rimanga in piedi, perché ogni anno che passa aumenta il profilo del rischio – ha affermato il ministro. – Lo stadio deve riprendere una vita attiva, utile alla comunità e rispettosa del suo valore architettonico prima che sia troppo tardi».

Abodi added that the Flaminio could be incorporated, more as a training facility, in line with Lazio’s expectations and Italy’s bid to host Euro 2032.

The Italian Football Federation must inform UEFA by 1 October of the five Italian stadiums selected for the tournament, and even a training‑centre role for Flaminio would represent a strategic first‑rank result for Lazio.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri echoed this possibility, stating: «se l’iter dovesse andare avanti, il Flaminio potrebbe procedere quasi affiancato a Pietralata, con tempi non molto distanti, perché si tratta di due progetti completamente diversi».

The timing is critical (Il momento).
