Thomas Tuchel Claims England Star's Behaviour Undermines Squad Unity

Thomas Tuchel claimed that the behaviour of an England star has become a concern for him after the defender’s public reaction to being omitted from the squad. The German manager said he had spoken privately with the player but that the outburst “doesn’t help” and he will not hold it against him.

Tuchel’s Squad Decisions

One of the hardest parts of the job for any international manager is picking the squad, and Tuchel’s latest England team left out big names such as Phil Foden, Adam Wharton, Noni Madueke, Ollie Watkins and Morgan Gibbs‑White. The latter’s fiancée took to social media to voice frustration at the snub.

Harry Maguire, the Man United defender, was another notable omission and he expressed shock and disappointment, saying he was confident he could have played a major part this summer. His mother Zoe posted “Absolutely disgusted” online after the decision.

Tuchel said he was surprised by the family’s outcry but explained that he had a private conversation with Maguire and that the defender’s behaviour did not convince him to rush him back into the squad. He added, “I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life, because I’m not that type of person. I can forget easily and quickly,” before concluding, “But I didn’t like it and it doesn’t help. I’ve not spoken to him since.”

England will now face Spain, Czechia twice and Croatia during the extended international break that runs from September into October, giving Tuchel further opportunities to assess his selections. The fixtures will test the depth of his selections ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The manager’s comments underline that off‑field conduct will be weighed alongside ability when he finalises future England squads. Such a stance may influence how players respond to squad decisions in the coming months.
