This signing could finally lift Hannover 96 out of the second tier
Under the bright floodlights of the HDI-Arena, Hannover 96 unveiled their newest recruit, Marcel Hartel, as fans watched the club’s emblem flash on the screen, signalling a bold step in the quest to climb back to the Bundesliga after seven years in the second tier.
Since Tuesday evening it became official that Hannover 96 have signed Hartel on a contract aimed at securing promotion. The club described the move as a perfect fit for their mission to return to the top flight. Hartel arrives from St. Louis City in MLS, where he spent the latest season.
Hartel’s pedigree and impact
The 30‑year‑old Cologne native brings a résumé of promotion experience. He helped Arminia Bielefeld rise in 2020 and was instrumental in FC St. Pauli’s 2024 return to the Bundesliga. Earlier in his career he featured for Union Berlin, adding depth to his German pedigree.
In the 2. Bundesliga Hartel amassed 185 appearances for Union, St. Pauli and Arminia Bielefeld, contributing 75 goals and assists combined. His MLS spell produced 38 goal contributions in 67 matches, showing he still possesses energy and creativity. These numbers underline his reputation as a calm, experienced leader.

At his unveiling Hartel said, “I looked very closely at which club in Germany would be the right fit after my time in MLS. The talks with Hannover 96 were extremely good and gave me exactly the feeling I needed for this step.” He added, “I was able to get a clear picture of what our football should look like and what contribution I can make to it.”
Hannover’s promotion chase
Hannover 96 have been a classic second‑division side since their relegation in 2019, a status that many Lower Saxony fans find painful to admit. Last season they hovered in the promotion playoff spot, one point behind second‑placed Elversberg with three matchdays remaining. A slip by the Saarlanders on Matchday 33 would have seen Hannover promoted automatically.
Instead, the team drew 3‑3 with Münster on Matchday 32, then another 3‑3 with Bochum, and on the final day a 3‑3 stalemate against Nuremberg allowed SC Paderborn to seize the playoff place. The season ended without the hoped‑for ascent, leaving the squad nervous ahead of the new campaign.
Coach Jonas Boldt praised Hartel as an experienced player who always plays an important role with his personality. Whether Hartel will start the Sunday clash against Reese & Co. remains uncertain, but his presence is already seen as the building block that could finally end Hannover’s long spell in the second tier.
